Raymond Frederico, who worked in the legal profession and is now president of a local Liberal Party Branch, was in the audience on April 11. He said the performance was “absolutely magnificent.”
Based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts was established in 2006 with the mission of reviving 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture.
The Shen Yun experience is classical Chinese dance and music, telling ancient stories and legends with effortless grace.
“The dancing was stunning and the costumes were absolutely beautiful,” Mr. Frederico said. “A very moving experience.”
Classical Chinese dance is said to have a history of several thousand years and was passed down through each Chinese dynasty, the company states. Over the years, it has become a comprehensive system of dance that boasts a variety of unique rhythms, movements, and meanings.
Mr. Frederico particularly enjoyed “the movement of the dancers; their hand movements, just really beautiful! Also admirable was their agility, their grace and athleticism.”
Traditional Chinese clothing is an important part of the 5,000 years of Chinese culture. The right clothing embodied the virtues of Chinese antiquity and to the understanding of self. There are many costume changes in the performance and the hundreds of gorgeous, hand-made garments span China’s dynasties, regions, and ethnic groups.
Mr. Frederico really enjoyed the costumes, saying: “The colours were superb and quite magnificent.”
He was moved by the contemporary scenes addressing present-day repression in China of freedom of belief and the persecution of Falun Gong, a traditional spiritual discipline. He said, “It’s a message that the world should hear.”
