After three white sharks were sighted by a spotter pilot 100 feet off the shore of South Beach in Chatham, five miles of South Beach in Chatham were closed. The rest of Chatham’s eastern shoreline remained open to swimmers, although swimmers should not be within 300 feet of gray seals, according to the Harbormaster’s office.

The sharks were likely to have been attracted to seals that were swimming close to shore there, Director of the State Division of Marine Fisheries Paul Diodati said.

A shark was tagged on Tuesday, July 27, 100 yards off South Beach, south of Lighthouse Beach.

The division of Marine Fisheries has confirmed seven great white shark have been seen off the coast of Massachusetts this summer. Four shark attacks have been documented off the Massachusetts coast. Of those attacks, two were fatal, according to a database compiled by the Florida Museum of Natural History.

Swimmers and boaters are advised to stay close to shore because of sharks. If they see a shark, they are asked to report the sighting to the local authorities.
