“Shaadi Ke Side Effects” beat “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” in the opening box office weekend overseas.

Bhaag had a favorable opening last year, garnering approximately $1.4 million.

But Side Effects has opened even bigger, drawing approximately $1.8 million, reported Bollywood Hungama.

That comes a surprise to many.

Side Effects ranked 23rd in movies in the U.S. after its big gross, on 89 screens, many in New York City.

It was 19th in Canada, on 19 screens, 15th in the United Kingdom and Ireland, on 48 screens, and 16th in Australia on 23 screens.

The film, starring Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan, is about a young married couple living in the city.

While the film had strong international numbers, some analysts and reviewers were disappointed with the storyline.

Shaadi Ke Side Effects is funny upto a point but then it loses the plot completely,” said analyst Komal Nahta via Twitter.

Farhan was happy with the opening weekend, telling fans via Twitter: “Weekend’s side effects for our film Shaadi Ke Side Effects have been good. Thank you all for your love and please keep the feedback coming. Big hug.”
