Joe Manchin, the Democratic senator from West Virginia, won his re-election bid, defeating State Attorney General Patrick Morrissey.

NBC News and The Associated Press projected his victory on Nov. 6.

Manchin was favored by public polling agencies until the election.

Manchin has cultivated a reputation of being one of the Senate’s most conservative Democrats and broke with the rest of his party to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

With around 57 percent of the vote counted, networks called the race for Manchin, who had 51 percent to Morrisey’s 41 percent.
