Second Earthquake Hits New Zealand’s North Island

[xtypo_dropcap]A[/xtypo_dropcap] second earthquake has hit New Zealand, this time in the North Island.

Earthquake monitoring system, GeoNet, has registered an earthquake 5.2 on the Richter scale. It struck at 10.48 a.m. Tuesday morning in the Hawke’s Bay area, around 200 kilometers from the capital Wellington.

According to the GeoNet website the earthquake's epicenter was around 15 km deep and the quake itself was felt from Hastings to Wellington.

Over 550 people have registered feeling the quake, the site says, but to date none reported damage.

The Hawkes Bay quake was not related to the massive 7.1 quake experienced in Christchurch over the weekend, according to GeoNet data centre manager Kevin Fenaughty, although they were caused by the same plates rubbing against each other.

"The two can't really be compared. The Canterbury quake released 900 times more energy than the one in Hawke's Bay," he said on website stuff.co.nz.
