Sebastien Buemi, who looked to be on the sidelines for the 2012 Formula One season after losing his seat at Toro Rosso, has signed on to be the Red Bull test and reserve driver, backing up Mark Webber and two-time champ Sebastian Vettel.

Buemi drove for three years for Toro Rosso, Red Bull’s sister team, before he and Jaime Alguersuari were replaced by Red Bull Junior Driver program graduates Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne for 2012.

“It was entirely logical for Sebastien to continue with Red Bull, having been a member of the Junior Team since 2004,” explained Red Bull team principle Christian Horner.

“He already knows the team well from his time with us in 2008 and has gained significant race experience over the past three years. He will complete important test and simulation work for us throughout the year and will be in attendance at each Grand Prix.”

Buemi will also serve as Toro Rosso’s reserve driver if needed.

Buemi’s skills will be on display at the first 2012 F1 test session at Spain’s Jerez circuit, Feb. 7–9.
