NEW YORK—The holiday season is coming closer, but don´t forget to go home safe after the celebrations.

On Dec. 2, representatives from grape-based vodka brand CÎROC, New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), and the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission announced a new plan for the Safe Rides initiative on Duffy Square, kicking off this holiday season’s campaign to curb drunk driving and make the city’s streets safer.

The Safe Rides initiative was started by Grammy Award-winning musician Sean “Diddy” Combs. Combs is in charge of all marketing initiatives for CÎROC.

This year, Combs and the company joined DOT’s anti-drunk driving campaign named “You the Man,” and produced 2,000 prepaid debit cards valued up to $25. These debit cards will be distributed at high traffic locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx during the holiday season.

The debit cards, called “the VIP pass to safety” by DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, are redeemable in the city’s 13,000 taxicabs, a number of participating car services, MTA, New York City subway, and Path and NJ Transit ticketing booths.

“We’ve got over 13,000 taxi and livery cabs that are designated drivers. We’ve got thousands of bus and subway conductors and drivers that are designated drivers,” said Commissioner Sadik-Khan at the announcement. “Let´s plan for a safe ride home for everyone.”

Some of the debit cards were passed out right after the press conference on Duffy Square. Brian Goldner from Queens, as well as almost a hundred others from the five boroughs came prior to the announcement to pick up a free $25 debit card.

“I won’t use the card for taxi. It’s too expensive. I’m going go exchange it for a metro card,” said Goldner.

According to the department, the rest will be handed out on Dec. 11, 17, and 31. Exact locations and times will be announced on the campaign’s official Facebook and Twitter pages a few days prior to each distribution event.

Along with the distribution of redeemable debit cards, “You The Man” also released a free iPhone/iPod Touch application, which provides an instant and easy sobriety test, links to car services as well as a Spin the Bottle game that helps to randomly pick a friend to be the designated driver of the night.
