Schwarzenegger pie: When Arnold Schwarzenegger was heavily into bodybuilding, he ate mass quantities of pie when he and other bodybuilders “would be dieting down,” he said in a recent Reddit “ask me anything” posting
“What normally happened with the pies was we would be dieting down, before a competition, and we would go splurge,” Schwarzenegger wrote.“We were depriving ourselves every day, and eventually, Franco and I would snap, and we would end up at the House of Pies in Santa Monica.”
The former California governor added: “We would each eat a whole pie, and then people would be shocked that we looked better the next day. I talked to ‘Men’s Fitness’ about this, and apparently it is a trend now. We were just going to go insane without the pie.”
Last year, he told “Men’s Fitness” that he was “carb backloading before it was hip” when he was bodybuilding in the 1970s and 1980s and added that “instinctively, we just felt like we needed the pie.”
Schwarzenegger also elaborated on his relationship with Joe Weider, a bodybuilding entrepreneur, who mentored him.
“Joe knew I wanted to get into acting, and he knew I was working hard, going to English classes. So he acted like my agent. And when a producer called for ‘Hercules in New York’ (it was called ‘Hercules Goes Bananas’ at that time) asking for a bodybuilder who could act, Joe said he had the guy,” he wrote.
He added: “Then he brought me to the meeting, and before we went inside, he said, ‘Arnold, don’t say a word. Don’t open your mouth.’ He went on and on selling me, but my favorite part was that he claimed I was a German Shakespearean actor. As far as I know, there is no such thing. But I got the role.”
Schwarzenegger won the Mr. Olympia bodybuilding competition seven times during the 1970s.
