California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger made a recent public apology for the painting-over of a well-known 9/11 mural located alongside Interstate 680. He said that he was not personally aware of the elimination of the mural until after it had already been done.

The San Jose Mercury News published an article that contained excerpts from the original written statement from Schwarzenegger.

The governor mentioned that the California Department of Transportation, known as CalTrans, covered up the mural as a part of their normal operations. He also mentioned that the timing was unfortunate due to the Fourth of July holiday.

“It has come to my attention that Caltrans has recently removed a patriotic and meaningful flag mural that was painted on the side of Interstate 680 following the tragic events of 9/11,” Schwarzenegger said. “To do so only days before we celebrate our independence and reflect on the freedoms we are lucky enough to enjoy in America is unconscionable.”

The mural was an unofficial tribute to those 2,976 people who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center.

“I extend my apologies to the artists whose mural inspired drivers along 680 for over eight and a half years,” said the governor of the most populous state.

Three artists worked together to paint the mural that was visible from the interstate in Northern California. One of the artists, Eric Noda, spoke about the change:

“I think that just gave me the chills and I got all choked up a for second,” said Noda to The San Jose Mercury News.

Last week, Schwarzenegger also proposed that 200,000 state workers receive minimum wage for their salaries.

The workers pay is not being monitored accurately due to the absence of a budget from state officials.

The governor is proposing that the workers receive Federal minimum wage, given past overspending by the state. The state of California is still working to reverse a $19 billion deficit, reported the Associated Press.
