Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced that no Senate Democrats will object to a bill proposing $2,000 stimulus payments, coming about a week after President Donald Trump called on Congress to include them.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said the bill will head to the House floor on Monday. In a statement, the speaker said Trump should call on GOP members of Congress to pass the larger stimulus payments measure.
The House is expected to debate the $2,000 checks on Monday.
The president should “immediately call on Congressional Republicans to end their obstruction and to join him and Democrats in support of our stand-alone legislation to increase direct payment checks to $2,000,” Pelosi said.
It came as Trump on Sunday night signed off on the more than $2 trillion omnibus bill and stimulus package that included $600 checks.
“I will send back to Congress a redlined version, item by item, accompanied by the formal rescission request to Congress insisting that those funds be removed from the bill,” Trump said in a statement, explaining that he is signing the measure to halt evictions, add more small business loans, assist with vaccine distribution, and halt evictions.
“On Monday the House will vote to increase payments to individuals from $600 to $2,000. Therefore, a family of four would receive $5,200,” he noted.
The president said that he expects Congress to review Section 230 of the federal Communications Decency Act, which “so unfairly benefits” social media companies.
