Cash-strapped prospective students are enjoying a host of odd options to pay for their college tuition. Scholarships for pig farming, milk mustaches, telepathy, and loyal Trekkies are among some of the most unusual ones offered.

Unlike conventional scholarships, this money isn’t all about the grades. In some cases, even possessing the right surname can also win some much-needed cash.

The Lambert and Annetje Van Valckenburg Memorial Scholarship began offering $1,000 scholarships in 2006. Named after the family who arrived in New York—then New Amsterdam—from the Netherlands, the scholarship seeks out “descendants, whether by birth or legal adoption” of the Van Valckenburgs.

Applicants’ names are required to have the precise spelling; variations are ineligible.

Other name-based scholarships include one given by Loyola University for those with the last name “Zolp.”

For pig lovers, the genetics supply company International Boar Semen (IBS) offers scholarships for those interested in managing swine.

The Parapsychology Foundation offers grants and scholarships for studying psychic phenomenon including “telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, psychokinesis, mediumship, ghosts and hauntings, out-of-body experiences, reincarnation, and other psychic experiences and phenomena.”

The foundation provides money for students who wish to pursue degrees in the fields of the paranormal, in addition to doctoral dissertations on the subject.

The “Got Milk?” campaign offers a Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) scholarship for prospective students who can manage to create the best milk mustache. Judges of the awards are also the faces of the campaign, including Lindsay Vonn and Apollo Ohno. The scholarship is awarded to 25 applicants.

To promote language studies, the Klingon Language Institute is offering a $500 scholarship named after the Star Trek character Kor.

According to the scholarship’s website, applicants need not be fluent in the fictional Klingon language.
