NEW YORK—Business software giant SAS was once again named the No. 1 company to work for, for the second year in a row, according to Fortune, which ranks the companies in its annual survey.

SAS, based in Cary, N.C., offers its employees free food, gym, summer camps, beauty salons (including tanning beds), and even car detailing services on its sprawling campus.

Said Milton Moskowitz, author for the Fortune list, “They were head and shoulders above anybody else.”

“People stay at SAS in large part because they are happy, but to dig a little deeper, I would argue that people don’t leave SAS because they feel regarded—seen, attended to and cared for. I have stayed for that reason, and love what I do for that reason,” said one SAS manager interviewed by Fortune.

The annual survey asks employees to anonymously rate their employers in terms of perks, benefits, and work satisfaction.

The top companies in the 2011 list are all familiar names. After SAS, the second-best company to work for was Boston Consulting Group, followed by supermarket chain Wegmans Food Markets at No. 3, internet giant Google Inc. at No. 4, and data-storage firm NetApp rounds out the top five.

Several first timers made this year’s list. Toy company Hasbro, investment research firm Morningstar, and hospitality company Darden Restaurants are three of the new entrants.
