SANTA ANA, Calif. (CNS)—A 27-year-old man was charged Nov. 24 with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated for a crash that killed a passenger in his car, which slammed into a Santa Ana Police Department SUV.

Jesus Emanuel Perez of Santa Ana was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury and faces a sentencing enhancement allegation of inflicting great bodily injury on the victim, 25-year-old Selina Resendiz Yanez of Santa Ana.

Perez was driving a Honda eastbound in the 1300 block of North Lowell Street when the car slammed into a parked police SUV about 11:20 p.m. on Nov. 20, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

The officers in the SUV were responding to a trespassing call at the time, Bertagna said. The two officers were treated at an area hospital for minor injuries and released.

Yanez was taken to the Orange County Global Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m. on Nov. 21.
