CHENNAI, India—Tennis aces Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi of India won the Australian Open, open mixed doubles title recently, the first Indian doubles pair to do so. They won a grand slam mixed doubles title held on Sunday Feb. 1, against opponents Andy Ram of Israel and Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy.

It was Mahesh’s 11th grand slam title, but the first great success for Sania. The final score was 6-3, 6-1.

Mahesh said after the match: “its been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster for me this weekend,” and that “I want to thank all the Indians—we are very lucky that there so many millions supporting us, not just here but back at home,” according to The Hindu, an Indian newspaper.

A beaming Sania said “It is a very good tournament for Indian tennis. I mean, even in the juniors, we had a Grand Slam champion as well. So, yes, it’s been a great two weeks.”

“It was nothing short of a dream-come-true moment,” DNA, another India newspaper, reported her saying.
