San Francisco police officer Antonio Cacatian took his own life during a traffic stop in Richmond, California around 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 18.

Cacatian, 49, was under investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies for allegedly having sexual relations with a minor in Las Vegas.

He was a nine-year veteran of the force, San Francisco Police Department spokeswoman Officer Grace Gatpandan said in a statement.

According to, Cacatian was driving on Hilltop Mall Road when a Richmond police car signaled him to pull over. Cacatian turned into the parking lot of Hilltop Mall and stopped his vehicle.

The Richmond police officer approached Cacatian’s car but could not see inside because the windows were heavily tinted. As the officer reached the driver’s side door, “he hears the gunshot,” said Lt. Felix Tan of the Richmond Police.

The Richmond officer retreated back to his patrol car to await back-up, after which he broke the car’s windshield with a bean-bag round and saw that the suspect “was alone and deceased,” Tan said.

San Francisco police spokeswoman Giselle Linane said Cacatian was the focus of an investigation “that involved multiple jurisdictions” but did not specify the details.
