Samsung Electronics Co. is introducing new bendable smartphone models that could be made public as early as 2017, according to Bloomberg, per anonymous sources.
The devices will use OLED, or organic light-emitting diodes panels. Bloomberg further expounds that the first model is a flip-phone that folds in half, while the second model is a 5-inch pocket-friendly handset that can unfurl as large as 8 inches.
Though such devices have never been commercialized by the South Korean-based company, the concept of a bendable phone is not new. A popular commercial with over 2 million views on Youtube on the flexible phone concept was produced by Samsung in 2014.
Bloomberg adds that the codename for the devices is “Project Valley,” and that Samsung could be looking to introduce at least one of the devices during the Mobile World Congress in February 2017. This would presumably give Samsung a leg up in its race with Apple, which is also producing iPhone OLED screens scheduled to be released later in 2017.
