The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy S5 will both have cheaper LCD panels to cut down on production costs.

The Plane to Line Switching (PLS) panels, replacing more expensive AMOLED panels, would cut down production costs by 20 percent, according to ET News.

Samsung is adopting the panels in part to battle competitors including Chinese smartphone maker Oppo.

The panels are already used in Samsung’s Nexus 10 and Galaxy Note 10.1.

The decision hasn’t been finalized yet.

Certain benefits come with PLS panels, according to the G for Games blog.

The panels could deliver a better user experience when the S-Pens are used. The pens are small pen-like devices that enable users to draw on the smartphone screen.
