For the first time in two years the Pacific Fishery Management Council allowed sport fishing for salmon near Sacramento.

Poor returns of the fish to Northern California caused the Council to ban fishing for some time to allow the species to repopulate. Commercial fishing is still banned, and few fish were caught on Saturday in rough weather.

The Council is a coalition of people who represent commercial, tribal, conservation, and sport interests. It makes decisions after extensive public comment, with the goal of maintaining fish populations.
