HONOLULU—Matthew Pickett, manager of Aqua Hotels, said he never would have imagined himself in this position, but watching Shen Yun Performing Arts at the matinee May 4 was a wonderful experience.

“I think this show is excellent,” Mr. Pickett said at the Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu. “Very entertaining.”

Mr. Pickett was impressed with the different ethnic and folk dances presented by New York-based Shen Yun, giving a glimpse into the many ethnic groups of China.

“The Mongolian Bowl Dance was the most impressive,” said Mr. Pickett, who attended the performance with his girlfriend Ms. Kehau Amorin, sales director for a hardware company.

“For me it’s just beautiful and it comes from a great, different culture,” Ms. Amorin said, adding that Shen Yun was a show she would be recommending.

“It’s very graceful,” Ms. Amorin said. “And yet even with the guys it’s very strong.”

With art forms like classical Chinese dance, Shen Yun presents 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, bringing the traditional Chinese values from the ancient past up to today.

Beyond the artistry, Ms. Amorin felt it was an educational experience and allowed the audience to see “what’s happening in China versus what you perceive to happen in China.”
