SEOUL, South Korea—South Korea’s military says North Korea fired more projectiles into the sea to extend a recent streak of weapons tests. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had told President Donald Trump that the tests would stop when the joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States are brought to an end last week.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Friday projectiles were twice launched from an area on the North’s eastern coast.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff didn’t immediately say what the weapons were or how far they flew.

Trump had downplayed the slew of short-range ballistic tests in recent weeks, saying they weren’t nuclear.

“In the meantime, I say it again: There have been no nuclear tests. The missile tests have all been short-range. No ballistic missile tests. No long-range missiles,” the President said on Aug. 9.

Trump cited progress between the countries, saying that a meeting with Kim is being planned to progress denuclearization dialogue.

Trump said he received the “very positive letter” from Kim last week.

He wrote on Twitter early Aug. 10, “In a letter to me sent by Kim Jong Un, he stated, very nicely, that he would like to meet and start negotiations as soon as the joint U.S./South Korea joint exercise are over.”

The president had previously said that he’d like to end the “war games” held with South Korea, citing their cost.

The joint U.S.-South Korea military drills are scheduled to end later this month.
