The United Nations high commissioner of Human Rights announced Thursday that a report accusing the Rwandan army of a possible genocide in the Democratic Republic of Congo will not be published until Oct. 1.

Ms. Navenethem Pillay extended publication of the report by a month after Rwanda protested the accusations and threatened to pull it’s peacekeeping troops out of U.N. missions, when excerpts from the completed report were leaked and published in the French newspaper Le Monde, last week. The extra month will give governments affected by the report time to comment.

The report listed over 600 atrocities committed in the Democratic Republic of Congo by the Rwandan army between 1996 and 1998.

The report highlights 10 incidents where Rwandan forces killed a large number of people without making a distinction between militia groups and civilians.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praised the Rwandese contribution to the operations Thursday and asked Rwanda to continue its participation in peacekeeping efforts.
