Mourners attended a funeral yesterday in the Russian city of Perm to honor the victims of Friday’s Russian nightclub fire. People laid flowers near the Lame Horse club, where 112 people had been killed by a fire sparked by the indoor fireworks.

Perm, the third largest Russian city by area, is located in the Ural mountains, about 870 miles east of Moscow.

Flames caught the plastic ceiling on Friday night during the club’s eighth anniversary. Many people were trapped and choked by the smoke as they tried to escape through the club’s single narrow exit, according to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

Regional emergencies service said that more than 120 people had been injured, many with severe burns and smoke inhalations.

Investigators found that the club didn’t have automatic fire extinguishers, and fireworks should not have been used indoors.

The nightclub’s owners and several other people have been arrested and face jail terms of up to seven years. The head of the company that supplied the fireworks may face manslaughter charges.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev accused the club’s management of gross negligence and called for a “full punishment.” Russia has declared Monday, Dec. 7, a day of national mourning for the victims of the disaster.

According to the government statistics, over 15,000 people in Russia die in fires each year. Negligence in the enforcement of fire safety regulations is cited as a frequent cause of the fires.
