SYDNEY—Shen Yun Performing Arts, the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, drew warm applause from matinee audiences at the Capitol Theatre on Feb. 12.
New York-based Shen Yun aims to revive the true essence of China’s 5000 years of civilisation through the universal language of classical music and dance.
In the crowd was Bill Salter, who attended the show with his wife, and ten members from the Rotary Club of Ingleburn.
“This is my first time [to see Shen Yun], and I’m really enjoying it,” he said.
Mr. Salter is president of the Rotary club of Ingleburn, and also the current District Governor of Rotary District 9750, a district that runs south of Sydney Harbour, all the way down to Kiama, and west as far as Balmain.
He is part of Rotary International, the largest international service organisation guided by the philosophy of ‘Service Above Self’ with more than 1.2 million members dedicated to humanitarian services and efforts to build goodwill and peace in the world.
Mr. Salter was amazed by the dancers. “I think the most impressive thing is the dancing,” he said. “They’re just really great.”
The hallmark of Shen Yun is classical Chinese dance, which is one of the most comprehensive and expressive dance systems in the world. Known for its incredible flips and spins, and gentle elegance, it is an art form built upon a deep foundation of traditional aesthetics.
Mr. Salter also enjoyed the digital animated backdrops. “The backdrop really sets off each of the scenes, that’s what I’m really enjoying.”
The high-tech state-of-the-art backdrops sweep the audiences to far-away times and places, such as celestial palaces, Mongolian grasslands, and sacred spots. The backdrop also interacts with the dancers and live orchestra to create a dynamic theatrical experience.
Shen Yun performances provide a glimpse into China’s divine culture. Alongside classical Chinese dance, and ethnic and folk dancing, Shen Yun portrays story-based dances, telling mini-dramas from ancient and modern times.
“Whether set in the past or in contemporary China, every dance embodies traditional Chinese values. Ideals of loyalty, filial piety, and veneration for the divine are cherished and celebrated. Heroes are extolled for their compassion and tolerance as much as their courage or determination when facing adversity,” states the Shen Yun website.
“Definitely more understanding of Chinese culture,” Mr. Salter said, “coming through in the presentation of dancing.”
“All the sessions were very good,” he added.
