A tornado touched down in Roseville, California on Wednesday night, damaging over dozen homes.
The tornado damaged the roofs of 12 homes and damaged the fences of six others.
Also, two homes were left with “significant damage” from being struck by debris, according to the Roseville Fire Department, which responded to the reports along with CAL FIRE.
The damage was reported at Pleasant Grove Boulevard and Monument Drive.
Eyewitnesses told KGO that it saw the tornado touch down around 7:30 p.m. The owner of a home in the area who captured footage of the tornado says he watched his picnic bench slowly lift up and spin around with debris flying around. Then his backyard fence exploded into shards of wood that sprayed the house next door, shattering the windows.
“It was just over in a matter of 10 seconds,” said Mark Thompson, the owner of the house. “Really scary. I’m very lucky because I shouldn’t have been out there filming it and I didn’t heed the warning, thinking that this is California we don’t have tornados here.”
“That’s pretty close,” said Danny Carter, one resident in the area. “You know, it hits pretty close and it was just so loud and we were watching the news the whole time and I thought, ‘This is it. It’s definitely coming.’ So it was pretty frightening for a little bit.”
Many funnel clouds were spotted across the state on Wednesday, including in Elverta and north of Sacramento.
KCRA captured a photo of one in the Roseville area and other eyewitnesses are posting photos on Twitter and Instagram.
The National Weather Service urged people to stay inside and move to the interior of their homes.
The tornado warnings have all expired though the service said that people should still be on the lookout for bad weather.
