BUCHAREST, Romania— Romania’s prime minister has disclosed that he is suspected of making false statements, money laundering and being an accomplice to tax evasion.

Premier Victor Ponta spent about 30 minutes at the anti-corruption prosecutor’s office on Friday, and emerged to tell reporters that he was a suspect. He declined to say whether he would resign.

Prosecutors have asked Parliament to prosecute Ponta. The allegations relate to his work as a lawyer from 2007 to 2008 when he was also a lawmaker for the Social Democratic Party.

Romania has intensified its anti-corruption drive in recent months.
