From “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1961) to the romantic encounter at the top of the Empire State building in “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993), without a doubt, New York City is one of the top 10 romantic getaway destinations.

What Makes New York Romantic?
Aside from places to stay, New York City offers many romantic activities such as Central Park horse-drawn carriage rides and ice-skating at Rockefeller Center. There are also many charming and romantic restaurants as well as a myriad of nightlife opportunities to suit the romantic taste. And that’s just in New York City!

There are many themed opportunities throughout New York State to suit even more discriminating romantic tastes. Surprisingly, some can be found in your “backyard,” quick and convenient escapes from everyday life in the city. Others provide respite farther from home. Here are just a few I found interesting:

In New York City proper, there was so much to choose from based on price, access, amenities, etc. I chose the 70 Park Avenue Hotel. Although not touted specifically as a romantic hotel, it is a boutique hotel committed to sustainable tourism practices. It also has spa services and yoga TV access with complimentary yoga accessories.

Eco-friendly products and services are key, to include in-room recycling and non-toxic cleaning materials. This hotel offers “a haven of quiet with the ambience of … Park Avenue pied-à-terre.” And, of course, all New York City has to offer is right outside the door!

The Jazzy Romantic Getaway
The Sugar Hill Harlem Inn is a four-bedroom, four-bathroom 1906 Victorian row house in the famous Sugar Hill district in Harlem. Restoration of the home included eco-friendly updates while retaining the Harlem Renaissance feel.

This Bed and Breakfast has rooms appointed to feature famous African-American artists, musicians, and others. There is a Lena Room, the most elaborate in the house, dedicated to singer/actress Lena Horne who, at age 16, began performing in the Cotton Club. The Satchmo Room is dedicated to famed jazz musician and later philanthropist Louis Armstrong.

The food served at the B&B is organic and the coffee and tea are fair trade. There is also a thoughtful garden that was established and is maintained without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides, with a fig tree and other plants that can withstand New York winters.

Activities available include the Dance Theater of Harlem, Parlor Jazz at Marjorie Eliot’s, and the Cotton Club, to name a few. Or take the Sugar Hill Walking Tour to get more of the area’s historic feel.

The Historic Romantic Getaway
The Cromwell Manor Inn Bed and Breakfast is a member of Best Romantic Inns and Hotels and also a registered Historic Inn Property. The restored 1820s inn has wedding picture-perfect grounds and provides many romantic services.

About one hour from New York City and only five miles from historic West Point Military Academy, this B&B is centrally located in the Hudson River Valley with access to many historic venues. These include the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, the “Castles” of the Hudson, the Storm King Art Center, the New York Renaissance Faire, and the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, just to name a few.

Cromwell Manor Inn has an extensive list of romantic wedding and anniversary services and packages and has been featured as a honeymoon destination in Bride’s magazine.

The Wine Country Romantic Getaway
Yes, there is wine country not far from New York City! The Arbor View House, an elegantly appointed Bed and Breakfast (B&B), is located in North Wine Country on the east end of Long Island. Just two hours from New York City, the Arbor View House is a luxuriously restored Victorian home that offers spa services and aromatherapy baths along with their usual B&B services.

Gourmet breakfasts are provided in an old-fashioned, communal and leisurely way. Although it has old world charm, the house also has modern amenities such as Jacuzzi baths, wireless high-speed Internet access, i-Pod docks, DVDs, and TVs with cable service.

For romantic activities, you can tour local wineries, take carousel rides in nearby Greenport, or enjoy leisurely walks on the beach in Orient State Park.

The Rustic Romantic Getaway

If you need even more change from city hustle and bustle, consider a rustic getaway at Cedar Lakes Cottages in Greenville, N.Y. The 500-acre estate has cottages, a five-bedroom vacation home and a rustic cabin available. Just 70 miles from New York City, the lakeside cottage and secluded bungalow have kitchens, fireplaces, and many other amenities.

Activities include hiking (to High Point State Park), nature trails, boating, and fishing. Cedar Lakes is situated in northern Hudson Valley where New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania meet on the Delaware river, providing easy access to tri-state opportunities.
