Roger Clemens, the former Major League Baseball pitcher who was originally slated to go on trial in April on charges he obstructed a Congressional probe into whether he used steroids and human growth hormones, will now have the case pushed back to July, according to Reuters.
On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton set the motion to delay the trial as Clemens’ team of lawyers requested that they get more time to look through more than 54,000 pages of documents. His lawyer Rusty Hardin said that there was a “voluminous” amount of evidence that needed to be reviewed, according to AFP.
His lawyers also said they need to find a witness who could testify for the seven-time Cy Young winner.
The 48-year-old former pitcher was indicted on several counts of perjury, making false statements, and obstruction of justice. He faces a $1.5 million fine and as many as 30 years in prison, but due to federal sentencing guidelines, the former ace would probably only get between 15 and 20 months in prison.
In 2008, Clemens said under oath that he didn’t use steroids or HGH in front of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. His former trainer Brian McNamee said that he injected Clemens with the drugs but Clemens denies the claims.
