The Colorado Rockies have hired former player Walt Weiss as their new manager, according to a report on MLB’s website. The team will hold a formal introductory news conference on Friday.

Weiss replaces Jim Tracy who resigned on October 7 after posting a 294-308 record from May 2009 to the end of 2012.

The 48-year-old Weiss played four of his 14 big league seasons in Colorado, from 1994-97, as the team’s shortstop. He came up with Oakland and was named rookie of the Year in 1988 after playing in 147 games and posting a .250 batting average for the American League champs.

Weiss retired after the 2000 season and worked for Colorado from 2002-08 as a special instructor and advisor to the front office. Last year Weiss took over head baseball coach at Regis Jesuit High School, in Aurora, Colo., where his son Brody played, leading the team to a 20-6 record.
