After publicly admitting to serving illegally possessed whale meat, fashionable Santa Monica restaurant The Hump will be closing its doors.

Following intense pressure in connection to their use of endangered whale meat, the business owners decided the best way to have a positive impact on the ongoing battle against illegal whaling was to close their doors.

The Hump posted an official statement on their company website, stating that they were saddened by their mistake and expressing a deep regret for their actions.

“The Hump hopes that by closing its doors, it will help bring awareness to the detrimental effect that illegal whaling has on the preservation of our ocean ecosystems and species. Closing the restaurant is a self-imposed punishment on top of the fine that will be meted out by the court. The Owner of The Hump also will be taking additional action to save endangered species,” read the statement on the restaurant’s website.

The company’s statement claimed that there will be further donations made to the efforts surrounding the elimination of illegal whale hunting.

The Hump’s owners will still be accountable for paying fines for possessing and selling the illegal whale meat, which is in violation of the state and federal laws.

The Hump was in business for 12 years and had gained success in the upscale beachfront community.
