Republican Scott Brown has won the special election held today January 19 in Massachusetts for the Senate seat held by the late Edward Kennedy for almost 47 years.

No one could have predicted just a few weeks ago that Martha Coakley, thought to be a shoo-in would lose this race. Voters turned out today despite the bad weather, and elected Scott Brown to the United States Senate. Brown took 52 percent of the vote winning the race over Coakley’s 47 percent.

Brown in his victory speech said, “What a great reception, what a great crowd, and I’ll bet they can hear this cheering all the way to Washington, D.C. I hope their paying close attention because tonight the independent voice of Massachusetts has spoken. He followed saying, “Tonight the independent majority has delivered a great victory.” Brown said to the room, “I’m ready to go to Washington without delay.”

Republican Scott Brown’s victory indeed sends a clear message to Washington. His victory has now created a 41st filibuster sustaining vote in the senate. This vote may kill the Obama health care plan soon to be up for vote in the Senate. Brown has stated that he will cast his vote against Obama’s health care plan.

According to Brown’s campaign site on the issue of health care Brown said, “I believe that all Americans deserve health care coverage, but I am opposed to the health care legislation that is under consideration in Congress and will vote against it. It will raise taxes, increase government spending, and lower the quality of care, especially for elders on Medicare.
