President Obama’s old Senate seat in Illinois, fought between Democrat Alexi Giannoulias, member of the House Appropriations Committee, and Republican Mark Kirk, ended with a Republican turnover 48-46, reported Fox News. The President campaigned for Giannoulias.

As the polling precincts reported their results, the margin between the candidates remained fairly steady with a one percent difference separating the two with most of the polling results in.

Illinois Republican voters rallied more closely around their candidates that Democrats in the lead up to the election. According to a Public Policy press release, 87 percent of GOP identifiers planned to vote for Kirk, while 78 percent of Democrats planned to vote for Giannoulias.

The President was in Chicago over the weekend helping to rally support for Giannoulias. Earlier in the week, former president Bill Clinton also visited Giannoulias.

Rod Blagojevich was accused of attempted to sell the Illinois Senate seat vacated by President Obama in 2008, causing a scandal.

LeAlan Jones, Green party candidate, won three percent of the votes and Libertarian candidate Larry Stafford also picked up three percent.
