Ahmad Khan Rahami, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Afghanistan, was arrested by police in Linden, New Jersey, a law enforcement official told NBC New York and the New York Times.
According to NBC, he was apprehended following a shootout with law enforcement.
Rahami is wanted in connection with a bombing in Chelsea, Manhattan, on Saturday night that injured 29 people—along with several devices found planted around New Jersey and New York City. An explosive device went off in a town along the Jersey Shore earlier on Saturday. Police also found pipe bombs near a train station in Elizabeth overnight on Monday, which were detonated.
On Monday, the FBI and the New York City Police Department released a photo of Rahami, whose last known address was in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Officials sent out an alert to smartphones at around 8 a.m. local time, describing him as “armed and dangerous.”
NBC reported that the shooting and subsequent arrest occurred at around 10:45 a.m. local time after police were called over reports that someone was shooting at passing by cars near the Linden train station.
There are conflicting reports of injuries, as Linden’s mayor, Derek Armstead, told WABC-TV that two people, including a police officer, were shot. He also said a suspect was shot. The reporter noted that it’s unclear if the shooting is related to the manhunt for Rahami.
Linden is located just south of Elizabeth.
“We have a lot to connect him to the Seaside Heights device, to the 27th Street device, to the 23rd Street device,” a law enforcement official told then New York Times. “And in all likelihood the Elizabeth train station device—which is a half-mile from his residence. So, the ideology, the connection to international terrorism, we might flesh that out as we go through the results of search warrants, looking for computers, discs, things like this. Search warrants that we did Sunday night at the residence in Elizabeth.”
