Report: Kevin Hart Undergoes Back Surgery After Crash

September 2, 2019 Updated: September 3, 2019

Actor Kevin Hart reportedly underwent back surgery after a serious car crash over the weekend.

A source told the entertainment news website TMZ that doctors performed the successful back surgery on the evening of Sunday, Sept. 1. The report also said that the comedian is expected to stay in the hospital for several days.

TMZ-like website The Blast also quoted a source as saying that “the surgery went smoothly, and he is doing ok.”

A source told the news outlet in another report that it is “not a spinal cord injury,” and Hart is “able to walk and move his extremities.”

Officials told TMZ that the driver of the vehicle, identified by the Los Angeles Times and in other media reports as friend Jared Black, was pinned under his seat next to the roof. A female passenger was also pinned in the car, but did not suffer major injuries, reportedly.

The LA Times identified the female passenger as a 31-year-old woman from Woodland Hills, California.

The fire department had to cut off the roof to remove the two. The driver was airlifted to the UCLA Medical Center, TMZ reported, adding that both his and Hart’s conditions were not yet known.

Reports said that Hart wasn’t driving. Police officials said there is no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved, according to ABC7.

The California Highway Patrol confirmed Hart sustained injuries in the 12:45 a.m. crash, reported ABC7. It took place around Mulholland Highway and Cold Canyon Road.

“Two of the three occupants were trapped inside,” the CHP added to the LA Times. “The remaining occupant and the owner of the vehicle, Kevin Hart, left the scene to his nearby residence to get medical attention.”

According to an Instagram post in July, Hart said he bought the Barracuda for himself on his 40th birthday.

On Saturday, before the crash, he wrote that he was happy to be home during Labor Day.
