NEW YORK—As the New York Giants prepare to take on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5, some Giants fans took Wednesday to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the team’s first Super Bowl win.

On Jan. 25, 1987, the Giants defeated the Denver Broncos 39–20, giving the franchise their first Super Bowl victory. The Giants trailed at the half, 9–10, but exploded in the second half by scoring 30 points, setting a Super Bowl record (points scored in the second half) that still stands today.

Super Bowl MVP Phil Simms had a near flawless performance completing 22–25 passes including three touchdown strikes to three different receivers.

To commemorate the historic victory, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano honored former New York Giants punter Sean Landeta in a ceremony in Mineola, N.Y.

The 25-year NFL veteran spent nine seasons (1985–92) with the Giants, during which he played in and won two Super Bowls (1986, 1990).

When asked for advice for this year’s team he said, “Enjoy it because when they look back on it, they are going realize how quick it went,” according to CBS New York.

Landeta said that, while the road to the Super Bowl is difficult, it is even harder to win. He will be rooting for his old team—even predicting a Giants victory, according to Newsday.

The Giants will take on the Patriots in their quest for the franchise’s fourth Super Bowl Championship on Sunday Feb. 5 in Indianapolis.
