A German hiker’s remains were found in an Alpine glacier in southwestern Switzerland on July 15, 2017. He went missing in 1987.
Two hikers climbing the Lagginhorn mountain discovered the German’s remains—a hand and a pair of shoes—protruding from Hohlaub Glacier, 6 miles east of the Matterhorn, according to a local police department from Valais.
The remains were flown to a hospital in Bern, Switzerland, the day after the discovery. Authorities had to wait to fly the remains due to unfavorable weather conditions. There he was “formally identified” as a German citizen born in 1943, who went missing on Aug. 11, 1987.
The man’s family has been informed of the discovery, a Valais police spokesman told The Associated Press.
This discovery was made about three weeks after a mummified couple ,who were missing for nearly 75 years, were discovered on Tsanfleuron Glacier, 45 miles from Hohlaub.
