In a wild finish, the New Jersey Devils (20–30–4) defeated the visiting Carolina Hurricanes (26–21–7) in overtime 3–2 at the Prudential Center on Tuesday night, extending their great play to yet another game.

Since the All-Star break, the Devils have been on a tear going 10–1–2 and have racked up 22 points in 13 games.

Johan Hedberg was in net for Tuesday’s game as Martin Brodeur sat sidelined from an injury (sprained knee) he sustained during Sunday afternoon’s big win over the Montreal Canadiens.

Hedberg was excellent between the pipes stopping 20-of-22 shots on goal and was especially impressive in overtime.

Wild Finish

While neither team scored in the first period, the Hurricanes looked more efficient as they put pressure on Hedberg who managed to turn back all nine shots he faced. On the opposite end, Carolina’s Cam Ward also looked sharp in net.

Both teams broke out offensively though in the second period.

The Hurricanes got the first score of the game at 9:22 as rookie center Jeff Skinner skated down the left side of the ice and put a quick shot past Hedberg.

But the Devils answered right back after winger Mattias Tedenby put away a no-look pass from Jason Arnott in front of Carolina’s goal at 11:31.

Devils defenseman Colin White commented to MSG on the Devils effort in the second period, “We got back to work and cycled a lot in that period.”

At 8:37, Carolina’s Skinner put his team ahead after getting his second goal of the game, beating a sprawled out Hedberg.

Minutes later, the Devils would answer after Ilya Kovalchuk skated the length of the ice, putting a hard shot on goal that was rebounded to an open Nick Palmieri who scored at 17:06—the Devils young winger from Utica, N.Y., put it past the right shoulder of Ward and evened the score at 2–2.

Palmieri commented, “I think our line [with Kovalchuk and Travis Zajac at center] and as a whole is starting to develop some pretty good chemistry. It’s my job to get in front of the net and get rebounds.”

The Devils managed to salvage at least a point by sending the game to overtime. But they were not done yet.

After several huge saves by Ward and Hedberg, the Devils got the last laugh after lighting the lamp for the last time as Tedenby got the game winning goal at 2:42.

Hedberg, who played one of his best games of the season talked about the huge win, saying, “It was great. It was a tough played game.”

Regarding the rest of the Devils season, Palmieri commented, “I don’t think anyone has lost hope. I think the way we’re playing now, everyone is starting to believe we have a chance [to make the playoffs].”

Things will remain challenging for New Jersey as 14 of their 28 remaining games are against top conference teams, but they are playing red hot now and the sky’s the limit for this team.
