On Saturday night at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey, the New York Red Bulls were able to guarantee their place in the MLS Cup race, by defeating the Kansas City Wizards 1–0.

Dane Richards continued his impressive play by scoring the only goal in the fifth minute. It was on a throw in from the right side of the field off of which Richards stole the ball from defender Jimmy Conrad. He was able to gain some space and come up with an accurate left-footed finish that floated by Wizards keeper Jimmy Nielsen.

Fellow teammate Tony Tchani said, “Dane is on fire right now…He’s always wide open. Sometimes when I’m supposed to play that long ball, I can look and find him. Especially if he’s past that last and final defender and timing his run I know he will get it.”

Tchani started the game in the place of Rafa Marquez who was unable to pass a fitness test.

“He’s almost unstoppable,” said Red Bulls coach Hans Backe on newyorkredbulls.com. It was Richard’s fourth goal in the last five matches.

Red Bulls keeper Bouna Coundoul is another name besides Dane Richards that has been overshadowed by the newly acquired designated players. His play however has been anything but in the shadows.

The last two matches for Coundoul have been shutouts. Against the Wizards he stepped out on several challenges. On two different occasions his aggressive keeping brought him to the top of the box to strip a Wizards forward of the ball and stop a quality scoring chance.

The Wizards had their chances as Kei Kamara had a free kick that beat Coundoul and ricocheted off the top corner post.

It was a physical contest and by the end of it the Red Bulls had a total of three yellow cards.

Up next for the playoff bound Red Bulls is Real Salt Lake, which will be played at Red Bull Arena on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Red Bulls only have three matches left in the regular season play.
