NEW YORK—Brooklyn Councilman Domenic Recchia announced this weekend he will run for Congress instead of running for Brooklyn Borough President.
Recchia is unable to run for City Council again because of term limits and he has considered running for comptroller and Brooklyn Borough President. On Saturday, he said he will run for the 11th Congressional District, against incumbent Michael Grimm (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn).
“I’m in!” he said on Twitter, linking to an article in Staten Island Advance in which he said it’s time for a change.
“We need new leadership in Washington that gets results,” Recchia told the Advance. “It’s time for me to step forward and make a difference.”
Recchia has garnered $814,000 for his upcoming run, according to campaign finance records.
The 11th Congressional District includes Staten Island and a small part of southwest Brooklyn. Recchia told the Advance he’s not worried about Staten Islanders not voting for a Brooklynite.
“People want somebody who’s going to make a difference, to stand up and make sure we get our fair share.” he said. “Many people who live on Staten Island are from Brooklyn.”
State Senator Eric Adams is now the main candidate for Brooklyn Borough President; incumbent Marty Markowitz is term-limited.
