Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel takes a 13-point lead over Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso for 2013’s final Formula One race, the Brazilian Grand Prix, but the Red Bull pilot might have another fierce competitor to contend with: Brazil’s Climatempo weather site is predicting heavy rain for race day.
Rain could start Friday night and return for final practice and qualifying, the site says, and Sunday could see heavy rain and gusting wind.
Vettel will win his third consecutive World Drivers’ Championship if he finishes on the podium regardless of where Alonso ends up. A win is worth 25 points, second, 18 and third, 15 points; the way Vettel has been driving, only a serious mechanical problem or a major error could stop him from joining legends Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher as drivers winning the WDC three years running.
Rain increases the odds of the untoward happening. Vettel is a fine wet-weather driver, as in Alonso, but both would have to contend with the rest of the field, where enthusiasm sometimes trumps experience.
