The Oakland Raiders (4-2) have traded for 32-year old quarterback Carson Palmer, formerly of Cincinnati, for a first round pick in 2012 and conditional second rounder in 2013.

The bold move by the Raiders comes two days after after starting quarterback Jason Campbell broke his collarbone and minutes before the NFL’s trade deadline.

With the trade the Bengals officially entrench Andy Dalton at the quarterback position. The rookie out of TCU has led Cincinnati to a 4-2 record while throwing for seven touchdowns and completing 62.4 percent of his passes.

Palmer, a former number-one pick and Heisman Trophy winner out of USC in 2003, had been absent from the team the whole season. Presumably retired, yet still in his prime, Palmer led the NFL in TD passes (32) and completion percentage (67.8) in 2005 and had back-to-back 4,00 yard seasons in ‘06 and ’07. In parts of seven seasons Palmer has amassed a career 86.9 passer rating and has been selected to two Pro Bowls.
