CHINA - According to a Mingpao News report, following a rabies outbreak in several areas including Yunnan city and Liaoning province, the number of people infected with rabies in Beijing is also increasing monthly. From January to June alone, 69,332 people have been infected with rabies.

The Beijing Morning News quoted the latest information announced by the Beijing Health Department, that in June this year, 15,000 people in Beijing city sought treatment for rabies, nearly double the figure of a few months ago. The number of deaths caused by rabies rank first amongst all infectious diseases.

The number of phone calls inquiring about rabies also ranks first amongst all hotline calls enquiring about disease prevention. Currently there are 45 clinics designated as “rabies vaccination and prevention clinics” in 18 districts and counties in Beijing. These clinics operate 24 hours.

According to an analysis made by the Beijing Health Department, the increasing number of rabies cases is caused by the hot summer weather. People wear less clothes, more people go outdoors to find a cooler place and more bring their dogs out for a walk. Hence there are increasingly more cases of people bitten by dogs.
