Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her husband the Duke of Edinburgh begin a nine-day tour of Canada after arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on June 28. The Royals will also travel to Toronto, Waterloo, Winnipeg, and the Ottawa region.

In Halifax, the Queen will attend a native Mi’kmaq community event on June 28 and conduct a fleet review to mark the Canadian Navy Centennial on June 29.

She will then head to Ottawa where the royal couple will visit the renovated Canadian Museum of Nature on June 30 and celebrate Canada Day on Parliament Hill on July 1. This is the seventh time Queen Elizabeth has visited Canada on Canada Day.

On July 3 in Winnipeg, the Queen will dedicate a cornerstone at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the newest Canadian national museum. She will also attend the unveiling of a statue of Her majesty created by deceased sculptor Leo Mol.

In the Greater Toronto Area from July 4 to 6, the royal couple will attend horse races at the Woodbine Racetrack where contenders will be vying for The Queen’s Plate, a trophy dedicated to Elizabeth’s great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria.

They will also visit the facilities of Research in Motion (RIM), creator of the Blackberry phone, in Waterloo, west of Toronto. The tour will culminate on July 5, with a state dinner in Toronto hosted by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen Harper. Here, the royal couple will meet Canadians who have made significant contributions to Canadian society.

The heads of the Commonwealth will depart from Queen’s Park, the Ontario Legislature located in the provincial capital, Toronto, on July 6, with military honors.

They will then travel to New York City where the Queen will address the United Nations General Assembly on July 9, something she has not done for 53 years.

The trip comes on the heels of a Canadian Press Harris-Decima poll that found that 45 percent of respondents did not know the royal couple was coming, while 48 per cent agreed to the statement that the monarchy constitutes “a relic of our colonial past that has no place in Canada today.”

Although she came on royal duties twice as a princess at the age of 16 and 25, the tour marks the Queen’s 22nd official visit to Canada.
