Puppy tied to tracks: A puppy tied to train tracks in California narrowly escaped certain death after the train’s engineer spotted the dog.

The 10-month-old poodle terrier mix was tied up near Mecca, located in Southern California, reported the Los Angeles Times.

The puppy, which was named “Banjo,” is now up for adoption.

The owner of the dog was identified as a 78-year-old man, authorities told the paper. They said that he might have been “senile.”

“It’s probably one of the worst things I’ve seen,” Union Pacific Special Agent Sal Pina told NBC News after he untied the dog.

“I’ve never seen something like this,” he said, adding that he owns the same breed of dog.

Pina says he couldn’t pursue charges against the unidentified man because he appeared confused and didn’t understand what he'd done.

The dog was taken to the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms, reported Fox 5 in San Diego. The dog was described as “very healthy and friendly” by a local worker.

The worker took the dog home to “give it extra care,” they said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
