Prostate cancer claimed the life of character actor Harold Gould last week, according to the New York Times. Gould was 86.

The actor died in Woodland Hills, California, his spokesperson for the Motion Picture and Television Fund told the Times on Monday.

Gould, who appeared as characters who were suave and well-dressed, is probably best known for the roles he played in the 1970s TV sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show and in the later spin-off, Rhoda. He played the Rhoda’s father in both shows.

Beside these shows, he appeared in episodes of Cannon, The Love Boat, Hawaii Five-O, Dallas, Night Court, Touched by an Angel, The King of Queens, and many others. He also had a recurring role on the Golden Girls.

Gould was born Harold Vernon Goldstein in Schenectady, New York in 1923 and served in the army in World War II.

Hould received a Ph.D. in dramatic speech and literature from Cornell University and taught acting in college before turning professional.

Gould is survived by his wife, three children, and five grandchildren.
