Over 200,000 glass vases are being recalled due to safety concerns that they can shatter easily.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada, working with a retail supplier, announced a voluntary recall of the vases on Tuesday.

The vases are being recalled by The Gerson Companies of Olathe, Kan. The firm has received nine reports that they can shatter while being held in the middle, causing lacerations to the hands.

The glass vases are described as being quite thin and tall. About 212,000 of the 20” tall and 4” wide vases were sold at Michael’s stores in the United States and Canada from July 2006 to March 2010. A label on the bottom of the vase contains a printed SKU#405334 and UPC: 0-37916-88960-3.

The Gerson Companies recommend providing a proof-of-purchase, discarding the vases, and contacting them for a full refund at (877) 461-6298, or e-mailing them at [email protected].

The vases were manufactured in China, a country that has experienced a slew of product safety recalls over the last few years. A World Net Daily study released in June 2007 stated that imports from China were being recalled by the CPSC at twice the rate of those from everywhere else in the world.

The same report mentioned the commission’s concerns for public safety due to a proliferation of counterfeit electrical products from China, such as circuit breakers, power strips, and lighting, which were “causing fires, explosions, shocks, and electrocution.” At the time of the report, of the 152 product recalls that year, 104 were products manufactured in China.

There are currently several products, including children’s toys, that are being recalled due to toxic amounts of lead and cadmium.

“Love Tester” mood rings and necklaces, also made in China, are being recalled by the CPSC due to unusually high lead content. The jewelry, imported by D&D Distributing-Wholesale of Tacoma, Wash., was sold in various stores throughout the United States between September 2005 and June of this year.

A children’s tiara (crown) called the Wilton Youth Tiara, distributed by Wilton Industries, is also being recalled due to high amounts of lead.

A line of children’s jewelry made in China and distributed by Tween Brands of New Albany, Ohio, is being recalled due to high levels of cadmium, described as being “toxic if ingested by children,” and may cause “adverse health effects.”

The jewelry comes in various styles and shapes, as bracelets, necklaces, and earrings shaped like hearts, butterflies, cupcakes, and peace signs, with some bearing the words “Best,” “Friends,” “Forever,” and “BFF.”
