LAS VEGAS—Shen Yun International Company opened in Reynolds Hall on March 15 at the newly opened Smith Center. “Very beautiful,” said Jamey Gallagher, an executive producer.
Mr. Gallagher is an executive producer at Encore Productions. Encore Productions is an award-winning event production company based in Las Vegas, with 20 years of experience. They design and produce events nationally and internationally.
New York-based Shen Yun is the premier classical Chinese dance company in the world, with a mission to revitalize true, traditional Chinese culture through the arts.
Mr. Gallagher appreciated learning about the traditional Chinese culture, “For us [in the USA], the longstanding tradition, here isn’t ‘here’ as much as it is in China. So to really see that, the storyline that has lasted so many hundreds and thousands of years is very interesting.”
Shen Yun depicts stories from China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture. The stories range from ancient to modern times. To bring to life these stories they use classical and ethnic Chinese dance, the original and unique sounds of their orchestra, which blend traditional Western and Eastern instruments, an animated digital backdrop, and soloists trained in the bel canto technique, who perform Chinese lyrics.
Being a producer of world-class events Mr. Gallagher appreciated every aspect of the show: “All of it! It’s the whole show. It’s very nice, and beautifully executed, and very well done. Orchestra sounds great, the narration, very nice; the video projection, very well done.”
However, one of the vignettes stood out for him, When Shaolin Monks Protected the Emperor.
“I like the Shaolin monks, said Mr. Gallagher. ”It’s entertaining, it’s got some humor to it.”
Ancient, traditional Chinese culture was based in principles such as benevolence and justice, propriety and wisdom, respect for the heavens and divine retribution. It is a divinely inspired culture.
“The spiritual message is very nice. A little bit of insight into the Chinese culture,” said Mr. Gallagher.
He found Shen Yun’s performance overall to be “culturally entertaining.”
