President Obama responded this weekend to the House Republican’s recently issued “Pledge to America”—a 41-page document it is said was built by listening to suggestions received from Americans on the America Speaking Out website. The site is a forum for Americans to offer ideas, to debate, and voice their concerns about government policies. A key area of disagreement between the two parties has been how to repair the economic crisis and bring back jobs.

The president said of the Pledge, “Many were the very same policies that led to the economic crisis in the first place, which isn’t surprising, since many of their leaders were among the architects of that failed policy. It is grounded in [the] same worn out philosophy: cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires; cut the rules for Wall Street and the special interests; and cut the middle class loose to fend for itself. That’s not a prescription for a better future.  It’s an echo of a disastrous decade we can’t afford to relive.”

In the Pledge to America, Republicans strongly criticize the current administration, offer a plan to repeal and replace the passed health care overhaul bill, propose solutions to protect American jobs, promise to keep the Guantanamo Bay prison open, fund missile defense, and enforce sanctions against Iran.

According to the president, the ideas the Republicans say come from ordinary Americans have the effect of providing tax breaks to companies that ship jobs overseas. He accused them of being in the thrall of corporate interests.

“So, America may be speaking out, but Republicans in Congress sure aren’t listening. They want to put special interests back in the driver’s seat in Washington,” said the president in his weekly address to the nation. President Obama publishes a video talk on the Internet each Saturday.

“They want to roll back the law that will finally stop health insurance companies from denying you coverage on the basis of a pre-existing condition. They want to repeal reforms that will finally protect hardworking families from hidden rates and penalties every time they use a credit card, make a mortgage payment, or take out a student loan.”

House Republicans in the “Pledge to America,” describe the administration as arrogant and out-of-touch self-appointed elites.

“Politicians in Washington have imposed an agenda that doesn’t reflect the priorities of the people. What’s worse, the most important decisions are made behind closed doors, where a flurry of back-room deals has supplanted the will of the people,” says the Pledge.

The America Speaking Out website—where Americans are said to have contributed the ideas that shaped the Pledge to America’s debate, offer opportunities to comment under the categories of American property, fiscal responsibility, American values and national security.

Under the topic of job creation, “ K R Jack” offered a suggestion. “Find, detain, prosecute, and deport all of the illegal invaders. Again thousands of shovel-ready jobs will be created. Hundreds of thousands of jobs will also be vacated by the Illegal Invader.”
