NEW YORK—Thomas Prendergast was nominated as chairman and CEO of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday.

Prendergast had been serving as the interim executive director of the MTA since Jan. 1, after Joseph Lhota resigned to pursue a mayoral campaign.

“Tom Prendergast is a consummate public transit leader who is the ideal candidate to oversee the nation’s largest transportation system,” Cuomo said in a statement. “From the track bed to the budget to modernizing our system for the 21st Century, I can’t imagine anyone having a better understanding of how the region’s vast system operates and the challenges that it faces.”

Prendergast, a Chicago native, said he was honored to lead the MTA, the largest transportation network in North America.

“The MTA will improve the customer experience, operate more efficiently and build for the future,” Prendergast said in a statement. “We will aggressively rebuild smarter and better in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.”

The governor’s appointment of an MTA chairman and CEO is subject to State Senate confirmation.

The MTA looks after the subway system, buses, the Long Island Railroad, and Amtrak. It is the largest transportation network in North America.
