The remains of what could be an Iraq veteran who went missing three years ago may have been found near the Georgia home where he was last seen.
Chase Massner, 26, was last seen on March 27, 2014 at the home of a friend in Kennesaw, Georgia, about 23 miles northwest of Atlanta.
His wife Amanda, with whom he had two daughters, and his mother, Stephanie Cadena, reported him missing the next day.
After a tip about some remains in the backyard of the friend’s house, police were working Tuesday to secure a search warrant. In June, CBS 46 reported that cadaver dogs signaled the possibility of a body in the backyard under a pad of concrete under the deck.
While the identity of the body remains under investigation, authorities did say the remains are those of a human and not of an animal.
At the time if his disappearance, Massner was working as a night manager at a QuikTrip convenience store in Kennesaw after serving less than a year in Iraq as a military police officer, a friend of the family told the Marietta Daily Journal.
According to a Cherokee county police report, Massner and his wife were having arguments in the days leading up to his disappearance.
The Charley Project, which provides information on people who have been missing over a year, says he had bipolar disorder. His condition worsened after he came back from Iraq.
He had gone to stay with a friend for a few days because he wanted to “get some space,” his page on the Charley Project says.
His wife said she dropped him off at a QuickTrip in Cobb County where he worked the day before he went missing.
The friend told podcaster Nancy Grace of “Crime Stories“ that he had gone out to run an errand, and that Massner disappeared between when he came back from the errand and when he started cooking dinner.
“He had to have,” he said. “That’s the only logical thing.”
The friend no longer lives in the house, which has new occupants.
