Porsche has upgraded its top-of the line Grand Touring car, the four-door Panamera Turbo, now offering an “S” version.

The new Panamera Turbo S boasts a ten-percent increase in horsepower and a seven-percent increase in torque over the base Panamera Turbo—while delivering the same fuel economy, according to a Porsche AG press release.

Power has been boosted to 550 bhp and torque to 550 foot-pounds, by adding improved lighter titanium/aluminum turbine wheels to the twin turbochargers, and reworking the electronic engine management system.

The new model features an “overboost” function which activates in “Sport” or “Sport Plus” mode, or in normal mode during part-throttle kickdown (when cruising, the driver stomps sharply on the gas), which increases torque to a full 590 ft/lbs for emergency acceleration, Porsche claims.

The new Panamera S hits 62 mph in 3.8 seconds form a standing start, and tops out at 191 mph, according to Porsche. All this while still returning 21 mpg.

Various electronic ride management functions keep this four-door speedster firmly on the pavement.

First there is Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) which counters body roll in hard cornering, increasing both traction and passenger comfort. Then Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) electronic differential lock, which maximizes torque and traction to both driving wheels at all times.

Finally Porsche includes the Chrono Turbo package, which adjusts the suspension and engine to Normal, Sport, or Sport Plus modes depending on the driver’s desires.

The Panamera Turbo S comes with either 19 inch, all-season Michelin tires with optimized rolling resistance (the tires you need to get that claimed 21 mpg) or sportier 20-inch Turbo 2 wheels with wider rubber for that extra cornering performance, and a four-position automatic rear spoiler which trims the cars aerodynamics for maximum performance in different situations.

If you want a Panamera Turbo S, best place you order now. Deliveries don’t start until June 2011, but it is likely this US$235,000 high-performance family car will sell out quickly.
